1. What is this site about?
The primary purpose of this site is to provide a way for individuals to
store recipes on their computer. We just add the benefit of not having to worry
about installing any programs. As an added bonus, you can make recipes in your
database available for others to view and discuss.
2. Do I have to share my recipes?
No. There is no requirement that any of your recipes be available to anyone but
yourself. The down side to this is that there can be no discussion regarding the
recipe while it is private.
3. What is this recipe discussion I keep hearing about?
If your recipe is publicly available, there will be a link at the bottom of the
recipe that says "Read User Comments". This link will take you into the chat area
for your recipe.
4. How do I post links to other sites in my comments?
The comment engine is designed to automatically detect hyperlinks. If you
type in "www.mysite.com" into your message, it will automatically become linkable
once submitted.
5. I don't have a computer monitor in my kitchen! How am I supposed to cook this stuff!?
Run back and forth, of course! Seriously though, you can print out a recipe by clicking
on the "Print" link at the bottom of the recipe. If for some reason that link is unavailable,
then you can click on the "File" menu item in the upper-left hand corner of your web
browser, then click on "Print". We also offer support for Palm
Pilots so that you don't need to kill so many trees. Just click on the "Add to Palm Pilot"
link on a recipe and follow the instructions.
6. I see a link in a comment. If I click on it, will I leave this site?
No. The hyperlink engine automatically opens links in new windows. This
allows you to visit the link without losing your place in the discussion.
7. I have a question not answered here.
If you can't find an answer to your question, you have two places to turn. One
is to post the question to a chat area, the other is to go to the
Suggestion Box and send us your question directly.
8. I tried a recipe and it doesn't work!
The recipes in the public directory are submitted by our users and are in their
personal database. Many times the user has not even tried the recipe, but intends
to in the future. In this case, you can ask the user not to make their recipes
public until they have tried it.
Another common problem is that recipes often work fine for some people, but not
for others. The reasons for this are wide and varied, but a couple common reasons
are altitude (yes, it does make a difference!) and ingredients. For example,
organic ingredients are often much coarser than most processed ingredients. You
should probably check user comments on the recipe to see if someone has already
stated a solution, and if no one has, post your own comment with your experiences.
9. Why should I register?
In order to keep everyone's private databases seperate from one another, we had
to implement user accounts to associate recipes with. To this end, we only ask
for basic information (name, email, password) to establish your unique account.
This information is also used when you post a comment in an effort to discourage
spammers and keep My Recipe Database clean. (Of course, any companies
willing to contribute are most welcome.)
